State Government

Alaska's executive branch is headed by a governor and a secretary of state that are elected for four-year terms. Alaska's bicameral legislature has a senate with 20 members and a house of representatives with 40 members. The state sends two senators and one representative to the U.S. Congress. The state has three electoral votes.

Until 1966, Democrats dominated the state's politics, but since then Republicans have gained control.

The blue field of the Alaskan flag represents the sky, the sea, and mountain lakes.  There are eight stars.  Seven of those represent the Big Dipper and the eighth represents the North Star.
